For most men, summer is always the best time to play with clothes. There’s less fuss about layering! It’s light. It’s cool. It’s the best excuse for gym bums to wear something as close to the skin, while not over exposing the packs unless the venue is on the beach.
This season is all about looking fresh and cool while not looking like you just got out of the house and forgot to change. So, even if you say that you wear shorts in the house, you can still wear shorts for casuals but look ready for summer fun.
One tendency, though, is to wear house clothes like it was for the outdoors. Remember, house clothes ought to remain worn at home. Check out a few staples below so you’ll be ready for the great outdoors.
Shorts
Walkshorts
These days, walk shorts are a craze. It’s easy to wear & comfortable. They are practical for the summer because they keep you cool. It’s lightweight and allows for more movement, especially on outdoor activities. Walkshorts are also great for effortlessly giving your legs a tan, even when you don’t mean to.
There are a number of styles and designs you can choose from. For the fashionable metro guy, checkered (plaids) and interesting patterns, as well as denim shorts, may work for your taste. For the outdoorsman, cargo shorts with its useful pockets may suit you. Those who will be frequent to the beach at this time may find earth colors a safe shade to make the sand traces less obvious. Shades of brown, gray and black are also easy to match with simple shirts.
Just remember, when you wear light-colored shorts, pair a shirt with darker shades. Variety of colors is more fun, just take note of the color scheme.
Cropped Pants
That pair of pants that looks shorter than the usual pants and longer than the walkshorts is better known as ‘cropped pants’ or ‘three-quarter length’ shorts. They’re fun and cool. Other styles would include strings on the side that allows you to pull the pants up in a crop (hence the name ‘cropped’) on the side to keep it shorter for more movement. Others have zip down style from the hem up to a portion up the side of the pants for a smoother look and for easier function.
The baggy style crop pants are best with simple shirts and slip-on rubber shoes. Check out Vans, Skechers, Merrell (Jungle Moc Nubuck), Nike, and Cole Haan for some really cool sporty slip ons. The tapered cropped pants are best paired with polo shirts and loafers. Check out Steve Madden, Cole Haan, Robert Wayne, and Rockport. They’re sleek and stylish.
Polo Shirts
With polo shirts, you can feel comfortable and still maintain the classic and elegant look. It’s a guy’s best friend, next to the collared office shirt, especially when you wish to hang out after work but would not want to look like you just got out of work.
If you’re in a dilemma whether to wear a polo shirt or collared shirt to a meeting but want to hang out after, by golly, wear a nicely ironed collared shirt to work and simply bring your extra polo shirt.
Why? Collared shirts are for serious business, but don’t look nice when worn untucked in the evening for a casual look. Who wants to wear a neatly ironed polo shirt with wrinkles at the lower portion freely hanging over the pants?
If you’re also worried about wrinkling your polo shirt in your bag, then iron and fold it neatly, and place it in between a tough folder to keep the fold in place.
Choose the cotton polo shirts to keep you cool for the warmer days. Try to play around with colors. This season is more about tropical colors: turquoise, green, corals, amparo blue (over navy blue), deep and soft yellow, champagne and neutrals. Reserve purple and reddish or beige pinks for more romantic evenings.
Casual Cloth Belts
Casual belts are staples, especially when you’re fond of sporting a tucked polo shirt. You may choose the cotton belts or those with a clothlike look and d-rings. These belts are best with rubber slip ons or even men’s leather sole flip flops with cotton straps.
Just note that slippers can’t be worn in the office, though. So, again, just tuck them in your bag if you wish to de-stress with the humdrum of the waves and the sand under your feet on a starry night.
Men’s Sandals and Flip Flops
Who say’s only girls can be vain with flip flops? Well men can play with their footwear too! Socks and warm weather don’t always sound good together. Although socks are hygienic, it’s best to keep them for sneakers and office or dress shoes.
For days when you just wanna have fun with the grass or sand, pick the flip flops. It’s comfortable and convenient. Lacoste ‘Puerto Net’ flip flops can really spell c-o-o-l and preppy. If you wish to keep the subdued look, try Simple ‘Gumbo’ flip flops. Canvas fabric flip flops are also good. Pair them with khakis and denims.
There are dressier sandals that look great with khakis. A top seller is Chaco ‘Cordonazo Ecotread’. It has a recycled rubber outsole and a ‘Biocentric’ polyurethane midsole. It has a soft leather lining and a leather lined footbed. What more can you ask for such a pair of flip flops? If you prefer a simpler cut, try Keen ‘Rockaway’. They’re uncomplicated.
One important thing to note when wearing flip flops: Keep your toenails neatly trimmed and your heels soft and smooth. Not that you need to be vain, just keep a clean cut look.
Jeans
Of the many styles and cuts available in the market, you have the opportunity and freedom to choose those that suit your need, mood, and fashion preference. Just remember to keep the baggy cut for outdoor physical activities to allow for movement. Reserve the straight cut and boot legs for days when you just want to dress up. Find the right pair for your figure.
If you’re tired with the same old blue look, then try to explore other colors that suit your personality. Neons and flashy colors are for the avant-garde. Have some shades of brown and gray. Black and white pairs of pants are staples. Try some taupe green or gray green. You may even want to explore with yellowish ivory and beige.
Sunglasses
This is a must-have fashion accessory. Choose the shape that suits the shape of your face. Tom Ford has a mouth-watering collection. However, the Ray Ban Wayfarer is the craze these days. A lot of celebrities have been spotted sporting this simple but classic accessory.
If you wish to keep durable but stylish ones, go for the Italian sunglasses. You’ll never go wrong with their style. If you’re the sporty type, try those that suit your active lifestyle. Sports labels offer a variety of shapes and styles that also serve their function according to the needs of a sporty.
Remember that brands don’t sum up the look. It’s how you carry the accessory or the garment with your own style and attitude. But a man’s first impression would always be a fresh breath, a cool fresh scent, and trimmed nails.
Were the suggestions too much? The writer would have wished that it has helped you more than it has annoyed you. If you’re wondering who’s writing this article, well let’s just say I’m a lady with simple fashion sense but with a particular taste for literature and style.
Wink!
